{"id":386,"date":"2018-04-08T20:43:06","date_gmt":"2018-04-09T01:43:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fredmcghee.com\/?p=386"},"modified":"2018-04-10T08:16:49","modified_gmt":"2018-04-10T13:16:49","slug":"the-austin-peoples-plan-to-fight-displacement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fredmcghee.com\/?p=386","title":{"rendered":"The Austin People&#8217;s Plan to Fight Displacement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On January 15, 2018 &#8212; Martin Luther King Day &#8212; I was privileged to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austinmonitor.com\/stories\/2018\/02\/austin-people-spoken-six-resolutions-displacement-gentrification\/\">help spearhead<\/a> the unveiling of what has since become known as the Austin &#8220;People&#8217;s Plan&#8221; to fight displacement and to help mitigate gentrification.\u00a0 We called ourselves the Austin <a href=\"https:\/\/poorpeoplescampaign.org\/index.php\/poor-peoples-campaign-1968\/\">Poor People&#8217;s Campaign<\/a> and held our press conference at the Montopolis Negro School, an important site not only for its history of African-American public education, but also for its heritage of serving the Burditt&#8217;s Prairie Freedmen&#8217;s Community in other ways.\u00a0 The fight to preserve the school site and the destroyed location of the former St. Edward&#8217;s Baptist Church also cast a disturbing light onto the shocking and cleverly camouflaged history of first class institutional racism in Austin.\u00a0 Take a look at some of <a href=\"https:\/\/fredmcghee.com\/?p=94\">my previous blog posts<\/a> to learn more about that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Austin Poor People&#039;s Campaign Rally\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jQUAcNa5acI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The video above describes the basics of what is contained in the People&#8217;s Plan.\u00a0 If you would like to download a copy of our press release <a href=\"https:\/\/fredmcghee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Press-Release.pdf\">you can do so here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I stated at our press conference, the plan we developed is a bottom-up and sensible proposal to initiate a more honest approach toward slowing down gentrification in Austin overall, not just in East Austin.\u00a0\u00a0Each resolution was carefully crafted by a dedicated, distinguished and experienced group of\u00a0diverse Austinites and was designed to be Targeted, Simple and Actionable&#8211;TSA for short.\u00a0 We spoke to dozens of community leaders, planners, colleagues and friends in other cities in Texas and across the United States to learn what works there and what might work in Austin.\u00a0 Perhaps most importantly, for once it was East Austinites, most of whom have to live on the frontlines of gentrification and in danger of displacement themselves, who were in the leadership in addressing this issue.\u00a0 This matters because as the <a href=\"https:\/\/fredmcghee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Displacement_and_Gentrification_AS17103_January_2018.pdf\">Austin City Auditor revealed in January 2018<\/a>, city leaders between 2000 and 2017 issued 541 recommendations and resolutions related to displacement and gentrification, most of them ignored or otherwise not fully implemented.<br \/>\n<span id=\"ac8d3ccb2\">The appearance of  <a href=\"http:\/\/icks.org\/n\/data\/ijks\/1482467975_add_file_2.pdf\">viagra viagra sildenafil<\/a> is similar to diamond.
